LiDAR data can provide measurements of the earth’s surface with improved accuracy, precision, and resolution. New high-resolution Digital Surface Models (DSM) derived from remotely sensed LiDAR data give the opportunity to study the topography at very accurate scale.


LiDAR will provide precise data to resolve geometric characteristics of channel network. It will give us linear variations in channel and floodplain dimensions which can be used to calculate Runoff volume, sediment yield, peak flow, transmission losses etc. Micro elevation changes and structural changes of channel can be identified with high resolution LiDAR data.


LiDAR derived DEMs can be effectively used for surface hydrological modelling like estimation of flow direction, accumulation and power, watershed delineation and identification of sub-basins in a watershed. The very high spatial resolution of LiDAR DEMs capture features that impact any standard surface hydrology model.


Suitable locations for irrigation can be derived from LiDAR data by analyzing various criteria; it can tell farmers where to expect irrigation runoff and where to plant crops that requires the most expensive fertilizers.
